Common mistakes
These are the most common errors we see — and why most drivers are better off with professional help than doing it themselves.
Uber drivers who don’t register from trip one face back-dated penalties. Delivery drivers who register too early or too late create compliance problems that are expensive to fix.
There are two methods for claiming vehicle expenses — and choosing the wrong one for your driving pattern can mean significantly less in your pocket. Most drivers don’t know which applies to them.
ATO penalties for overdue BAS grow every 28 days — up to $1,650. Many drivers don’t realise they’ve been accruing penalties for months.
Income from multiple apps needs to be combined correctly for both GST thresholds and your tax return. Getting this wrong in either direction creates ATO issues.
Most drivers who lodge their own return on MyGov miss deductions they’re entitled to or claim incorrectly — and don’t find out until an ATO review.
Records are required for most deductions — and going back to reconstruct them is hard. The right setup from the start makes everything easier. We advise new drivers on exactly what to keep.
Quick wins
These won’t replace professional advice — but they’ll make your accountant’s job easier and your deductions more accurate.
Use a free app like Hubdoc or simply email receipts to yourself. Paper receipts fade — digital copies don’t. Your accountant will need these.
A dedicated account for your gig earnings makes income tracking much simpler, keeps deductions cleaner, and makes BAS time straightforward.
BAS is due every quarter. Set a calendar reminder 2 weeks before each deadline — or lodge through us and we’ll remind you automatically.
These habits help — but whether you’re claiming correctly, at the right amount, using the right method — that depends on your specific situation. We work that out for you →
