WHO NEEDS AN ABN?
If you’re carrying on a business or working as an eligible independent contractor, you may need an Australian Business Number (ABN).
If you earn income through delivery or gig platforms and are carrying on a business as an independent contractor, you may need an ABN. Your income must still be reported for tax purposes.
Uber and DiDi drivers must register for both an ABN and GST from day one, even if their income is below $75,000.
This is a special rule for rideshare services in Australia.
If you’re carrying on a business as an independent contractor or freelancer, you may need an ABN for your business activities and invoicing.
An ABN identifies your business for tax and other business purposes and can be used when invoicing clients and registering for GST where required.
If you’re starting gig work as an independent contractor, you may need an ABN depending on your circumstances. If you provide ride-sourcing services such as Uber or DiDi, you must register for GST regardless of turnover and be registered before your first trip. We can help you determine which registrations apply.
When Do You Need GST?
If you drive for Uber, DiDi, or Ola you MUST register for GST immediately — regardless of how much you earn. The ATO classifies rideshare as “taxi travel” which has special mandatory GST rules. There is no $75,000 threshold for rideshare.
Amazon Flex, DoorDash, Menulog and other delivery drivers generally need to register for GST when their GST turnover reaches the registration threshold. Different rules apply to rideshare services.
